Columpio Mata de las Mozas is a place, where you’ll find a massive swing, along with other handmade pieces of wooden art.
COLUMPIO MATA DE LAS MOZAS
The man behind these beautiful swings and other handmade pieces of wooden art is none other than Alberto Regueras. Alberto was only four when he lost his father. His mother worked hard to raise the family, and years later, Alberto decided to offer something he would make with his own hands to his mother as a tribute to the sacrifices she made. And so on Mother’s Day, he gifted her two beautifully handmade swings, so she could enjoy the awe-inspiring views of Villalibe and Rimor.
Apart from the two beautiful swings, he has also made other beautiful models made of wood, such as equipment and items you’d find at a children’s park, a hammock, wood carvings and sculptures that you will see in the photos as you go on reading this blog post.
STARTING POINT
Columpio Mata de las Mozas is easy to get to. Although, you can get to Rimor by means of public transport, I’d recommend going by car. Once you arrive at the village, you can easily park your car in this very square called Plaza Cabuerca, where we did, and start your hike from here. As you will see in the photo, there’s a sign indicating where you should go. The village people are quite friendly, and will guide you, as to how to get to the starting poing. The town itself is quite beautiful to check out if you like nature.
THE ROUTE
The distance of the hiking route to and from the swings is less than 5 km. The good thing is, throughout the hike, you’ll come across slate signs guiding you all the way up to the swings.
BEAUTIFUL SLATE SIGNS
The route is easy to follow and is very well signposted, with slate signs with lots of beautiful phrases. Some of these encouraging phrases will keep motivating you to get to the top, from where you get to experience woodwork art and stunningly beautiful views of El Bierzo.
SWINGS, WOOD CARVINGS AND WOODEN SCULPTURES
Hiking all the way up to the swings is fairly easy, except for when it’s raining, as the trail can then get somewhat slippery. Once you get to the top, you will not only get to see the two beautiful swings, but also other mind-blowing models, items and pieces of art, made out of wood. One thing is for sure, Alberto is extremely talented and very good at wood carving and woodwork art.
APPRECIATION AND THANKS
Alberto Regueras has not only created this masterpiece of wooden art for his mother, but also for everyone else, and not just that, there’s no admission fee at all. Apparently, he’s already working on another project, which we’re eagerly looking forward to seeing.
As much as Alberto is thankful to his mother for the sacrifice she has made, we are also thankful to him for gifting us with art in the middle of nature. Muchas gracias, Alberto.
WRAPPING UP
I’d highly recommend checking out this place if you’re visiting El Bierzo, which isn’t too far from the city of León. And it’s not a difficult hike, leading to this awe-inspiring place, where you’ll get to see nature, as well as art, together.
Over the past few years, people have made massive swings in most parts of Spain, where you can swing along and enjoy breathtaking views.
I hope to be writing more blog posts on other beautiful swings that I’ve seen in Spain.
Stay tuned for more, and thanks very much for stopping by.
